St. Catharines city councillor Mike Britton and Niagara Falls city councillor Joyce Morocco, both members of the Niagara District Airport commission, pointed out recently that the airport has huge, unrealized potential for boosting economic development in Niagara by bringing in international flights.


They also pointed out that with Pearson airport expected to reach capacity by 2030, now is the time for Niagara to get serious about becoming a player in international jets.

“Dual role will reduce the number of politicians. That in itself is a worthy goal,” said St. George’s Coun. Mike Britton, who voted for the motion.

City councillors have provided their support to dissolving the joint municipal service board operating the Niagara District Airport Commission to explore a transfer of operations of the airport to the Region.

On Monday night St. Catharines council provided unanimous approval of motion proposing Niagara Region take over the operations, in what Coun. Mike Britton describes as a win-win-win situation.

St. Catharines council has thrown its support behind a proposal to transfer operations of Niagara District Airport to Niagara Region.

The “expansion of the airport will result in economic benefits throughout the region,” said Britton, who is a member on the commission.

The Niagara District Airport could bring millions of dollars in economic benefit to the area if the Region takes it over, its commission is advocating.

“It does serve an important purpose, it is an asset for the region, but it could be so much more,” said Mike Britton, a St. Catharines council member on the commission. “That’s what we’re focused on.”

St. George’s Coun. Mike Britton said there’s a huge appetite among residents to reduce the number of politicians in Niagara.

Britton, a first-time councillor, said the region is over-governed with 120 elected officials for about 450,000 residents, compared to Hamilton with 16 elected officials for about 550,000 residents.

Britton, 24, becomes the youngest member of council. The St. George’s councillor said it’s an “incredible responsibility” but he is honoured the residents put faith in him.

Britton said the biggest issue for the next term will be holding the line on property taxes, adding it’s an issue that affects everyone, including seniors, families and businesses, ultimately affecting job creation.
